Website Madness June 29, 2007

Filed under: Geeky, Nerdy & Artsy Stuff, Sad, Mad, Bad — elsja @ 10:12 pm

Go to this site:  ISLANDS RESTAURANTS

Study it… remember it… listen to the annoying neverending wave sound effects…enjoy it while you can, because on Sunday- it will be GONE! Replaced by a much fresher, cooler, more appealing website. Six months of hard work (and the last 2 weeks of insane stress) will finally pay off. Thanks to some amazing, hard-working designers, developers and all our peeps at IT Problem Solver… Islands Restaurants is getting a makeover!!! It may not be 100% perfect, but it better be damn well close! Go eat some yummy food there on Sunday for the 1st day of their 25th anniversary celebration!

On a completely unrelated topic… HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO PUT ON A DANG ROOF??? Seriously… they have been hammering away on my next-door neighbor’s house at 7 am EVERY DAY for the last week. There are a million guys out there- it shouldn’t take that long!!! WHYYYY? And they aren’t even done which means they will be out there tomorrow. Hopefully they have a later start on the weekends. :(

My Painting of Brett June 28, 2007

Filed under: Geeky, Nerdy & Artsy Stuff — elsja @ 7:39 pm

I couldn’t show it until my sister Jan saw it, but it arrived to her in Texas today so now I can post it for everyone to see.  I’m usually pretty critical and picky about anything I do, but I like it and my sister likes it and thats what really matters.

I painted this picture for her as a gift. I wanted to do something special for her after going through the pain of losing her husband and the father of her two young boys. This was my creative gesture.

This is the original picture I used to model my painting after, taken by Brett’s sister, Jill (who is a wonderful photographer)

Brett1.jpg

Ok so mine doesn’t look exactly like the picture… but it does look like Brett. My true test of this was when I asked my 4 year old niece who it looked like and she said “UNCLE BRETT.” And as if that weren’t enough, my nephew Carter, who is not even 2 looked at it and said “Daddy.”

My Artsy Weekend June 24, 2007

Filed under: Geeky, Nerdy & Artsy Stuff — elsja @ 10:30 pm

I pretty much spent most of Friday night and some of Saturday just painting. Let me remind everyone, I am not an artist… other than some rocking chairs for my niece and nephew- I have painted 4 things EVER. Two of those things were this weekend. I was pretty happy with how they both turned out. I can’t post them both yet, I have to wait before I show one of them, but the other is below. I painted some canvases for Jen’s bedroom at her request. They match the colors of her room really well considering I didn’t have much to go off of other than memory.

Anyways- take a look. Very basic, minimal and simple, but I think they work perfectly for jen’s simple decor :)

I’ll post my other painting later this week. It’s special and no one can see it yet.

Miss Me June 20, 2007

Filed under: Funnies, My Love — elsja @ 8:36 pm

When I was in Texas, I sent Andrew a text that said:

“It’s so cute here… they call everyone “miss”… Miss Jan, Miss Tammy, Miss Jackie”

His response was:

“That’s cute, but I just MISS YOU!”

A Sad, but Good Weekend June 17, 2007

Filed under: Good Times, Sad, Mad, Bad, Travels & Adventures — elsja @ 8:41 pm

I just got back today from spending a long weekend in Clearlake Shores, Texas for the memorial of my brother-in-law, Brett. Before I left, people kept saying “have a good weekend,” “have a good trip!” I thought… “how can I have a good weekend when the reason I am going is because someone passed away?” Well, even though there was a sad reason behind the trip, there was so much love and warmth and closeness that we all felt while we were there that it actually made the trip really special and I can honestly say I did enjoy myself because of that close feeling.

IMG_0270 (Small).JPG

Here are a few things that really made the trip nice:

1. The weather and surroundings- it was hot and humid, but as I told everyone when I was there… I like hot, humid weather. I’m probably the only person who does- it makes me feel like I’m somewhere tropical. My sister has this amazingly huge yard with actual real nature, no concrete, it has a very warm feeling, a great view of the water and boats…fully equipped with squirrels even.

2. The long talks on the porch in the evening. My sisters (Jan and Bronwen) and I as well as Brett’s sister Jill, cousin and a neighbor spent Thursday and Friday night out on Jan’s porch just drinking wine and chatting about everything until 1am. We talked about everything from family, life, death and love to roaches, spiders and other gross topics. The thunder and crickets in the distance just set such a cool ambiance- but the bug bites weren’t too pleasent.

 IMG_0297 (Small).JPG

3. The neighborhood and hospitality. I don’t know if it’s the south, just Jan’s friends, or the situation… but it is amazing how people open their homes and welcome total strangers in with loving open arms. It was great to feel like I could just walk over to Jan’s neighbor’s house and feel completely comfortable. I just met this woman on Thursday morning and by thursday evening I was going over to borrow a wine opener and play with their 11 new puppies. I love that the kids can still run around from house to house with no shoes and people just look out for each other and help each other out. And the amazing fact that a group of 15 neigbors just showed up yesterday with no warning and put together a new playset for my nephews in about 30 minutes.

IMG_0387 (Small).JPG

4. Having a nice time with my family. I figured the stress of the situation would put everyone on edge and it could be a stressful trip, but I think we all felt closer. I have many stories I could share- from needing to get 3 rental cars in the same night (for 1 carload of people) – to our navigation system leading us to the US customs gate of an oil plant at 1am (no joke, and clearly this is not where we wanted to go). Even with all these mishaps, I think we, (well at least I) could laugh it all off… and for anyone who knows me, you know that “laughing things off” is not my strong point. (by the way… 4 year old little Emma took the pic below- pretty good aim!)

IMG_0369 (Small).JPG

It was just a really nice, beautiful weekend. I’m not saying there weren’t really hard, tough, sad, and devestating moments, but I do believe it was a perfect way to remember Brett and celebrate his life. Anyone interesting in viewing the memorial video we created for Brett, click here.

Emma Sings “Take Me Out to the Ball Game”

Filed under: Funnies, Kiddyroos, Travels & Adventures — elsja @ 5:56 pm

On our way to the airport yesterday Emma decided to start singing for about 30 minutes. She kept trying to sing Take Me Out to the Ball Game but she wanted to say “Angels” and Preston kept saying “Padres” so she was getting very irritated that people were interrupting her song… (and making her mess up). I think it’s rather cute :)

In America, one in three women, and one in two men will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime.

Pancreatic cancer is the 4th leading cause of cancer death in the United States. It is the 3rd leading cause of cancer death among 40-59 year old men.

Approximately 37,170 people will be diagnosed with pancreatic cancer this year in the United States and 33,370 people will die from it. The number of Americans diagnosed each year of pancreatic cancer continues to rise unlike other leading cancers where an investment in early detection has led to a decrease in cancer incidences.

For all stages of pancreatic cancer combined, the five year survival rate is only 5%; the lowest survival rate of all major cancers.

The average life expectancy after diagnosis with metastatic disease is just 3-6 months. 52% of pancreatic cancer patients are diagnosed with metastatic.

Things I Should do More Often June 8, 2007

Filed under: Uncategorized — elsja @ 11:39 pm

1. Wash my car. I can’t remember the last time I washed my car. I remember when I got back from Australia at the begining of April it was repulsive, but then it rained. The rain bought me a few weeks…. but now it is back to being repulsive. Maybe one day it will get a bath. I’m committing to do it by next Friday. I can’t wash it before then because I still have “GO PADRES!” painted on the windows and I need to leave it on for the big playoff game Tuesday.

2. Wash my hair. I had washed my hair twice in 2 weeks before tonight. Tonight I decided, what the hell… I’ll wash it again. So that makes 3 times in 2 weeks. In my defense… I got it highlighted two weeks ago and the bleach she put in kinda dries it out.

3. Take the empty/half empty water bottles out of my car. My family recycles these days so when I take a bottle out of my car, it’s not like I can go easily toss it in the trash. Noooooo, I have to walk it ALLLL the way to the back of the house to a special trash bin. That is just too much work, so I let them pile up in my car (another thing preventing me from washing it. I won’t wash the outside until the inside is nice and neat). Today I at least got a bag to put them in so they dont roll all over the back floor. I found about 12 or 13 back there.

4. Record more TV shows. I haven’t watched practically any TV since my shows all ended. Wait… maybe that’s a good thing.

5. Take my vitamins. No explanation here… just something I need to do.

6. Sit at a desk while using my computer rather than sitting on the couch or my bed for hours. My back HURTS!

7. I think the most important thing I should do more often is see my fabulous boyfriend, but unfortunately- 7,000 miles puts a bit of a strain on that. Every few months just isn’t enough, but it’s all we have right now. On a positive note, I can say without a doubt… I see Andrew more than I wash my car :)

RB store’s closure leaves brides feeling jilted

Amid differing stories on boutique’s demise, women scramble to be sure they’ll still have dresses.

Staff Writer

Yolanda Ornelas visited five bridal shops before she found the perfect dress at Panache in Redondo Beach. It was a strapless silk gown she modeled in February and bought during the same shopping excursion, shelling out $1,800 to wear the designer number on her wedding day.

Now, with three months to go before her Aug.11 nuptials, Ornelas hasn’t gotten her gown and can’t reach any store employees. For two weeks, she’s called the Redondo Beach boutique and another in Los Altos, but she said no one has returned her messages. And, save for a few cardboard boxes, Panache has packed up and emptied the space it occupied on Avenue I in Riviera Village.

With wedding season in full swing, the store’s unexpected closing has sent ripples through the South Bay’s brides-to-be and network of boutiques.

Store President Jacques Robinson said Wednesday he was working overtime to fill orders and answer anxious phone messages from people who aren’t aware he’d left Redondo Beach. He blamed the shop’s demise on “a series of unfortunate circumstances” that spurred a wave of panic.

But worried brides who haven’t heard those assurances have been re-ordering gowns and venting their frustrations on wedding Web sites. Some seem more crushed and upset than they are angry.

“I’m kind of in tears,” said Mary Martin of Oakville, Wash., who in February handed over a $2,700 check for her daughter Maylana’s gown. “We weren’t really supposed to hear from them until the end of May Â… so we started calling then, and we got the recording. We’ve been trying to e-mail them and call them, to no avail.”

Brides of California in Torrance, which carries some of the same designer pieces, has received about a half-dozen inquiries from women looking to re-order their own dresses or those for their wedding parties, said store manager Laura Acosta.

One of Acosta’s customers, Michelle Galera of Carson, said she showed up at Panache early last month to inquire about the four bridesmaids’ dresses she ordered in January. When she discovered the store had closed, her fiance, who lives in Santa Clara, later dropped by the nearby Los Altos shop. He found the door locked and a note telling deliverymen to redirect packages, Galera said.

Although she’s still out money, Galera opted to order the dresses again, this time through Brides of California. She said she’s considering taking the Redondo Beach shop to small claims court.

“The store is empty,” she said of Panache. “There’s nobody there.”

Robinson says a sewage leak in his former Riveria Village building set the stage for the shop’s closing, although the management company denies it.

The plan was to shift about 150 outstanding orders to the Los Altos boutique and notify Redondo Beach customers that their dresses would be shipped to a different location.

“We created, unfortunately, more anxiety than was necessary when the store was closed,” he said. “It wasn’t handled as well as it should have been and created a lot of panic in the process.”

The company left a phone recording telling brides about the switch and store employees were supposed to contact the customers, but Robinson said the outreach “was at best done haphazardly.”

And when the “tsunami of phone calls” hit the the Los Altos shop, the manager quit, he said. The goal was to open that shop by appointment, but Robinson said he realized last week the plan wasn’t feasible.

His goal for the time being is to sell both shops so that, if need be, he can reimburse customers.

“I am actively making sure brides are getting their dresses and simultaneously working to sell the store,” he said.

Complicating matters is that Panache’s founder and vice president, Debra Willenberg, has been ill for several months, he added.

The management company that owns the modern Spanish-style building where Panache sold designer gowns and accessories disputed Robinson’s claims that a sewage problem led to the store’s demise. The boutique’s Web site states that a “a substantial leak” in February sent raw sewage flowing through the dressing room walls, forcing the store to close for three weeks.

The site says the leak occurred in the middle of a trunk show for the designer Marianne Lanting, which was “immediately halted.”

“The store, it smelled like a toilet,” Robinson said.

Michael Israelsky, a property manager with Summit Team of Fountain Valley, painted a far different picture. He said the store’s dressing rooms got wet when a toilet leaked in a neighboring restaurant, which subsequently picked up the bill for the carpet cleaning.

A spokesman with the Los Angeles County Health Department said the agency was called to investigate a leak Feb 13. but could not confirm the liquid was sewage.

“That was the only time” a problem occurred, Israelsky said. “A toilet overflow Â… I don’t really call sewage.”

Panache had been located at another storefront in the building but moved to a new space just a couple of months before, Israelsky said.

“I feel awful. Nothing is probably as meaningful as somebody’s wedding dress,” he said.as no reason why they weren’t.”

At least one formerly anxious bride is now without any wedding wear worries.

Danika Vasquez of Lomita said Panache agreed to give her a $341 refund after realizing her flower girls’ dresses weren’t going to make it on time. She was able to reorder the identical gowns at a Torrance shop and they arrived May 29 – in time for her wedding this Saturday.

A Nice Weekend June 3, 2007

Filed under: Good Times, Kiddyroos — elsja @ 10:53 pm

Well even though the weather was pretty shit until 3 or so every day, I still had a nice weekend.

Friday was real fun. I went to Magic Castle with my sister, Cathy, Ryan, Chantelle and Danny.

 mc.jpg

We all went up for Chantelle’s birthday and I really was impressed. Dinner was really nice and some of the magicians were pretty impressive. I must say, part of the excitment was getting to be the magician’s assistant for the main show. I was a “Barker’s beauty” (which means i modeled a toaster… long story). It was fun and i think the 3 glasses of wine made it even more fun. Oh and we saw this guy too: http://imdb.com/name/nm0884313/ Chantelle kept saying she saw the guy from “Crossing Jordan” and I had no idea who she was talking about… but once I saw him, I knew EXACTLY who she was talking about.

The night ended rather abruptly with bad news so we took off before the last show. Overall though, it was a really nice night.

Saturday I became an official honorary “soccer mom” or rather “baseball aunt” when I painted my car windows with ” PADRES ARE #1!!! and GO PRESTON!!”

Preston had his first baseball playoff game and his team won. I never knew kid sports could be so entertaining to watch…but it really got exciting! :)

And lastly, to top it all off, a baby shower for our dear friend Deanna. I still find it hard to believe that our friends are getting married, let alone having babies!!! But they are! And I’m sure Deanna and Mike’s little girl will be precious.
