Costochondritis. A mouthful of a word and a pain in the ass… or should I say chest?

You see about 4 weeks ago, after some intese days of pilates I started to get a pain in my chest on the right side. I thought I had strained a muscle from all the ab work I was doing. So what did I do? I went back to pilates. Hey, I was just getting started on my yoga & pilates health kick and there was no way I was giving up so soon because of a little pain in my ribs. Naturally after the class I was sore all over.

Well when all the soreness in my abs subsided after that 2nd class and the rib pain was STILL bugging me I decided to head to the doctor. It had now been 2 weeks and it wasn’t getting better. After an X-Ray showed that nothing was broken she diagnosed me with costochondritis, an inflamation of the cartilage where your ribs attach to your sternum. She offered me some prescription anti-inflamatories and walked me out the door telling me to come back in 2 weeks if it wasn’t better.

It’s not better. And after some self diagnositc googling I’ve discovered that it’s not likely to get better for a long time! Evidently healing cartilage is a lot harder than healing a muscle and I’ve read that pain can last months or even years! WTF? Ironically, D Diet is a pretty good one to be on when you have inflammation. Clearly though, it is not actually helping my cause. Everything I can find online basically says you can use ice, heat and anti-inflammatories but other than that you just have to learn to deal with it.

Ok, I can deal with it, it’s not terrrrrible, I can treat it, whatever. My issue is that I just forked over a lot of money for a 6 month yoga/pilates pass (which they did extend for 2 weeks due to my injury) and now I don’t even know if I can use it. I definitely don’t want to get worse. Argh the mental anguish. I finally commit to a yoga regime after wanting to get back into it for years and within 1 week I’m injured!

I hate the fact that I can’t do anything other than walk. I’ve walked so damn much this week to make up for my lack of yoga and frankly I’m just getting over it. 17k (10 miles) of walking before, during and after work in the last 4 days is just too much for me. I need variety. I need toning and definition. I need to use my arm muscles for something… ANYTHING! I need what I set out to gain when I purchased my yoga pass on August 1st.  Now, of all things, my ribs are preventing that from happening. Go figure.

  1. I wonder if the type of over the counter meds that Mom takes for her bones would help you out – Glucosamine Chondroitin? Sorry you are having this problem. Any pain that you have to live with, is disheartening. I love you

    1. I know of a few medicines- just would like to avoid having to take pills every day if possible. Seems to be better now but I’m going to start yoga again this week so it could come back. 🙁

  2. I’m sure you’ve already heard of it but Celebrex really helps me manage my knee cartilage inflammation – apparently Pat Gat has to take it every day as a well and it helps him.

    Might be worth checking it out with your doc.

    1. Yep I’ve heard of it. The pain seems to have subsided for now but we’ll see if it comes back as soon as I start back up with yoga and pilates this week.

  3. Another idea could be to book into see a health care provider who deals specifically with musko-skeletal injuries such as an athletic therapist, physio or osteopath (best if you can see an osteopath). They specialise in this area and may have some modalities or therapy suggestions that a GP wouldn’t necessarily know about. Hope you feel better soon.
